Rannu, Rain
The mobile revolution is changing the way we live and work. Within a decade mobile phones have evolved from devices used by only a few to being used several times a day by almost everybody, the impact of the technology has been greater than envisaged Mobile phones are already an integral part of all major developed economies and an increasing number of developed ones. The mobile internet is a powerful enabling technology that will make possible new services and applications. Mobile penetration exceeds Internet penetration which enables information society services to be reached by more people, the mobile phone can do to the internet what the telephone did for the telegraph, make it a truly mainstream technology. There are two hotspots of mobile technology in the world, Japan and Scandinavia. Estonia situated across the Baltic Sea from Finland and Sweden has benefited from several spill-over effects of the closeness of Scandinavian countries and is among the most wired and wireless countries in Central and Eastern Europe with internet penetration of almost half the population and mobile penetration more than half. This study takes a close look at the past, present and future of mobile value added services in general, as well as more specifically in Estonia.
