Evolution of the Transnistrian economy: critical appraisal

Center for Strategic Studies and Reforms
While armed conflict in Transdnistria of the 1990s had profound implications for economic development of the region, it has been mostly overseen until recently that in itself it had been largely driven by economic interests: a number of regional advantages made the alternative of secession an attractive economic option. By the end of the 199os Transdnistria experiences a shock of economic crisis similarly to other former Soviet republics, yet it came out of it with a baggage of legal basis, including legal norms for the functioning of economy, banks, money circulation, and foreign economic relations. The paper attempts to give an independent analysis of the state of the Transdnistrian economy and its developmental prospects, offering a more objective alternative to official appraisals of the Transdnistrian government that has been the sole source of information on this subject.
